Sacred Love & Lives 2024 Collaborations
More Sacred Love/Sacred Lives artist statements
Reading time: About 3 minutes

Sacred Love/Sacred Lives is a mixed-media embroidery art project I began at the end of 2022. I shared an initial round of artist statements in November 2023. Since then I have continued to work on artist statements for each piece in the series as and am publishing the statements here as I complete them.
The following are statements about the two collaborative pieces I made in 2024. Both of these pieces now belongs to the artists who made the original artwork, sent to them as a gift and expression of gratitude for being open to sharing their work with me.
Don’t let anyone tell you your life and who you love and how you love is anything less than sacred.
Disabled Lives are Sacred, Wren DeLafleur collaboration
Mixed-media: Stick on rhinestones and embroidery floss
When I shared this project with Wren, they sent me several line drawings they had done. The moment I saw their drawing of a cracked body with a flowerpot head, I could picture it with the phrase ‘Disabled Lives are Sacred’. This piece in particular spoke to me as someone who lives with chronic pain.
I am so grateful to Wren for sharing it with me for this series.
Trans Lives are Sacred, Ris Wong collaboration
Mixed-media: Markers and embroidery floss.
I was introduced to Ris Wong’s work by Cece Chow, a local poet and activist, but we had already connected without knowing it in a shared Discord. Our first collaboration together ended up being the very first issue of From the QILT2BAG+, which Ris made a colouring page for, but they were already working on this intricate vine and flower design for Sacred Love/Sacred Lives.
This piece feels extra special because it didn’t just inspire Ris to make a design for me to embroider. It inspired them to design an entire billboard for Hamilton Artist’s Inc! I love this kind of collaboration and any time we as artists can uplift each other’s work.
I am seeking to collaborate with other artists for this series.
If you have an idea for a design that would work for this series, please get in touch! You can email me: hello ‘at’ kschatch ‘dot’ com or look at the online gallery of this project to learn more.
