When I set out to find patches and pins to go on my denim vest I was looking for reflections of my practice. Queer and trans liberation stuff was easy to come by, as was anything to do with Indigenous liberation, socialism, anti-fascism, and anti-racism. I soon had a robust selection of patches and pins from fellow artists who share my commitment to collective liberation. But as I started to attach this collection to my vest, I realised I was missing an essential movement: Disability Justice.
I first came across the Disability Justice principles in 2019 and immediately recognized them as dharma. The Disability Justice movement is the most informed, collectively aware and intersectional movement I have ever taken part in. It’s also still in its infancy and therefore not broadly known outside of the core community of founders and those of us who have connected with them thanks to social media and word-of-mouth.
