Happy Pride month, ya’ll!
Here is to continued resistance to cisheteronormativity.
Here’s to the fight for bodily autonomy and access to well-funded healthcare.
Here is to throwing bricks and head butting cops.
Here’s to stitching together flags as a community.
Here’s to choosing new words for ourselves and reclaiming the words used against us.
Here’s to raised fists and limp wrists.
Here’s to telling our stories and refusing to let bigots ban the books we write.
Here’s to protecting trans and queer kids.
Here’s to honouring our ancestors by fighting like hell for the collective liberation of generations of people yet to be born.
Here’s to cross-community solidarity.
Here’s to learning from our elders and listening to the kids and everyone in between living their best rainbow life.
May you be safe.
May you be happy.
May you know, deep in your bones, that you are sacred and your life is worth living and our communities are worth protecting.
Below is a ‘zine update, Upcoming Event Announcements, and some past things I’ve put out in June to lift up and celebrate this gorgeous, abundantly rich alphabet soup community!
Enjoy!
From the QILT2BAG+
May 28th was the official launch party for issues five to eight of From the QILT2BAG+. The folks at Shelflife books did a wonderful job setting everything up and managing all the tech throughout the evening—if you weren’t able to attend or you live out of town, you can watch their reel of it on Instagram.
It was a joy to hear contributors Riley, Cece, and E read their contributions, and to have the honour of reading Alyjah’s poem. Thank you as well to Oliver for the incredible drag performance to close out the evening.
I have so much gratitude to everyone who came out, and everyone who has contributed to this project. It’s wild to me that the first issue came out in March 2024, and now there are EIGHT!
This project has been so lifegiving and uplifting for me, truly. It has been a wonderful way to build, grow, and strengthen community. I’ve made some incredible friends, any of whom I know will be lifelong friendships.
Also, I am VERY excited to announce that Alyjah and I are co-curating issue number 9: Indigiqueers! With the aim to have it out by September 30th.
If you’d like to support this project, all you have to do is buy some ‘zines!1 You can find them in my webshop, or you can get them from any of the many wonderful contributors, who are all linked up in each ‘zine listing.
A Panel Talk at the Library!
June 23rd marks the official 20th anniversary of the very first ever Fake Mustache show! I started Fake Mustache not long after trying drag for the first time and absolutely falling in love with it. I wanted to create a regular all-ages performing space at a time when that simply did not exist.
I am honoured to be hosting a panel discussion on the anniversary date with drag icons DevaDave, Michelle AKA El Rey del Sol, and Oliver Twirl. We will be discussing the legacy and lineage of drag, from it’s origins within formerly enslaved Black communities through to the drag ballrooms of the 70s and 80s to the new and growing communities of today.
This is a hybrid in-person and livestreamed FREE event! You can get tickets through Eventbrite.
Huge thanks to Calgary Queer Arts and the ArQuives for providing funding to pay honourariums to the panelists, and to the incredible folks at the Calgary Public Library for doing all the event management and set-up.
A Big Queer Variety Show!!!
Come July, Oliver Twirl and I are collaborating with folks from Black Pride YYC, Colores Del Alma, The Community Based Research Centre and Calgary Queer Arts (And hopefully Rang De Pride) to put on a Big Queer Variety Show! The date will be July 27th from 1:00 to 5:00.
I don’t know if this will be a streamed event yet, as that will come down to funding, but I’m so excited that I can help fund a chunk of this thanks to an art commission I’m currently working on.
Sparkling Queer Content
Back in June 2023 I put out four posts with 💖 Sparkling Queer Content 🌈 I recommend, from books to movies to shows to miscellaneous. I still stand by every one of these recommendations and while I can definitely share more, I figured I might as well reshare these for now.
